SE 1: Pressure Waves Composition/Improv Concert

Emerging composers from across Canada premiered new works and honed improv skills after a week of classes, group improv, private composition and coaching sessions with mentor composer/improvisers Glenn Buhr and Kathryn Ladano.

Presented with send + receive as part of their twenty-first edition, this evening’s concert brings together two utterly distinct solo performers, investigating the physical capacities of their respective mediums. Japanese improviser Tetuzi Akiyama boldly and delicately engages the acoustic guitar, attempting to convert its body into an electronic entity. Swedish composer and sound-artist Ellen Arkbro blends organ and electronics, examining the materiality and harmonic quality of chords and extending the timbral character of her instrument.

MAMA AFRICA: MIRIAM MAKEBA! traces the life and music of the South African singer and anti-apartheid activist, the voice and the hope of Africa. The first African musician to become a true international star, Makeba’s music – which influenced artists across the globe – always remained anchored in her traditional South African roots and conveyed messages against racism and poverty. Using rare archive footage of her performances, interviews and intimate scenes filmed over the years.

SE 4: Trimpin: The Sound Of Invention

Trimpin: The Sound Of Invention is an amusing exploration of the sonic world of an eccentric creative genius. Artist/inventor/engineer/composer Trimpin shuns the hype and hyperbole of the commercial art world – yet his freewheeling sculptures and outrageous musical experiments are cherished by museums all over the planet. Filmed over two years, this documentary feature follows the artist/inventor as he designs a 60-foot tower of more than 500 automatic electric guitars; builds an ensemble of huge marimbas that converts real-time earthquake data into music; and collaborates with the Kronos Quartet on an outrageous world premiere featuring toy instruments. Trimpin delights anyone interested in the mysteries, pitfalls, and sheer joy of creative experiment.

As a finale to her last season with GroundSwell, we celebrate co-founder/ Artistic Director Diana McIntosh’s illustrious career as a composer, performer and curator with a very special concert of her music. A retrospective sampler of new and old works showcasing the many facets of McIntosh’s unique musical voice, The Original McIntosh will feature theatrical solo performances, beautiful chamber music, electronics, spoken text, a dash of humour, and more. Join us for an eclectic evening celebrating a trailblazer of Canada’s new music scene.
