Ellen Fullman: Long String Instrument
with Okkyung Lee
co-presented with send + receive festival of sound
Friday, October 3, 2014, 8:00pm
Ukrainian Labour Temple, 595 Pritchard Ave.
GroundSwell is thrilled to co-present American artist Ellen Fullman with send + receive festival of sound v.16 as the guest of honour and inspiration for the festival’s theme of physical sound.
Ellen Fullman’s Long String Instrument is an elaborate installation of dozens of tuned wires fifty feet or more in length, suspended across a space. This extraordinary sculptural installation converts the Ukrainian Labour Temple into the body of this impressively large instrument with the audience contained within.
In performance, Fullman slowly moves within the instrument, ‘bowing’ the strings with rosin-coated fingers to produce warm, immersive and overtone-rich drones that use the acoustic properties of the space as the body of the instrument itself. The effect is both elegant and mesmerizing, filling the venue with sonorous floating harmonics.
Marking their second performance together, Fullman will be accompanied by accomplished and multifaceted cellist Okkyung Lee for this very special occasion.
