WAG-Qaumajuq (Main Hall and Visible Vault)
7- 8:30pm (doors open @ 6pm)
GroundSwell and WAG-Qaumajuq are thrilled to co-present North/South, a unique gallery concert featuring throat songs performed by Chasity and Caramello Swan, as well as music for violas and percussion played by Melody McKiver, Jennifer Thiessen and Ben Reimer. New collaborations/improvisations by Melody McKiver and Jennifer Thiessen, as well as group improvisations. Also, recent/new compositions by Melody McKiver, Jim Hiscott and more. The improvisations will be inspired by Inuit artwork on display in the Main Hall.
Come early at 6pm (before the concert) to view the spectacular collection of Inuit sculpture in Qaumajuq’s Visible Vault, as well as the curated selection of Inuit sculptures in the Main Hall presented alongside Wanda Koop’s painted series, The View from Here.
Join GroundSwell President Victoria Sparks in conversation with Jim Hiscott (composer, curator), Nikki Komaksiutiksak (throat singer), and Jennifer Thiessen (viola) as they discuss the second concert of GroundSwell’s 2025-26 season. Entitled “North/South”, this unique gallery concert interweaves musical and artistic cultures in an interdisciplinary dialogue. Throat singing by Caramello and Chasity Swan, compositions by Jim Hiscott and Melody McKiver, and group improvisations will be presented among artworks from the Inuit Sanaugangit exhibition and paintings by Winnipeg artist Wanda Koop.
Music: Melody McKiver, “Reckoning – Niizh”; Nikki Komaksiutiksak, “Breath” and “Nikki’s One Hit Wonder”
