Dear Friends of GroundSwell:

As GroundSwell’s 30th Anniversary Season draws to a close, I wanted to reflect on the ambitious year that we planned, and the year that we were actually able to pull off.

As you probably know, we planned 30 events to celebrate the milestone year in our three series: GroundSwell—Live (6 events); GroundSwell—Learn (12 events); and GroundSwell— Linked (12 events). Despite uncertainties, postponements, and cancellations associated with Omicron, I’m happy to report that we are on track to realizing 24 of the ambitious 30-event target for the year. Here’s a quick summary:

Our three live concerts were well-received and I want to thank everyone who braved the elements and came out to support Manitoban and other Canadian musicians in person. Our new pay-what-can ticket strategy was remarkably successful and saw a larger and more diverse audience overall. These concerts are also still available as fully-edited videos on GroundSwell—Linked (with no pay-wall). This past season, GroundSwell also commissioned seven new works, including three by emerging female-identifying Manitoba composers.

The outreach and education series, GroundSwell—Learn, saw partnerships with Send + Receive, Video Pool, the Winnipeg Film Group, the Desautels Faculty of Music, Brandon University School of Music and, for the first time ever, new projects with the WSO’s Sistema Winnipeg, Flipside Opera & Art Song Collective, the Winnipeg Classical Guitar Society and the Manitoba Classroom Guitar Society. We have one more film slated for this month in collaboration with the Winnipeg Film Group. See below for details.

In 2020 we created GroundSwell—Linked featuring new music content online and on the radio. For our anniversary year, we commissioned six “Mini Curation” videos from Manitoba artists in a wide range of style and aesthetic. This project will wrap up in the next few weeks with projects by Jason Tait and Luis Martinez. See below for our fifth Mini Curation of the season.

GroundSwell also embraced a strategic planning exercise in 2021-22. This is still in progress and we’re enjoying the opportunity to reflect on where we are and where we want to be over the next 30 years of our organization’s history.

Once again, thank you for supporting GroundSwell during these uncertain and challenging years. And don’t forget to check gswell.ca for details on 2022-23 season as plans become available.

Have a safe and relaxing summer season.

Sincerely,

Karen Sunabacka, President, GroundSwell, Inc.
